What Is a Mouse Jiggler? Hardware vs Software, and Which You Need

A mouse jiggler is a device or a program that makes tiny, periodic cursor movements so your computer never registers an idle period. That is the whole idea: no idle period means no screensaver, no screen lock, no sleep, and no presence indicator quietly switching to Away.
This guide covers what a mouse jiggler actually does, the difference between the hardware dongles and mouse jiggler software, and the option most people should reach for first — which is neither.
What it does, mechanically
Windows keeps a running count of how long it has been since the last keyboard or mouse input. Screensavers, lock policies, sleep timers and presence indicators all read that counter.
A mouse jiggler resets it. That is the entire mechanism. It does not simulate work, it does not tell anything you are present, and it has no view into what you were doing — it produces an input event so the counter goes back to zero.
Understanding that is what stops you buying the wrong thing, because two different problems get solved by two different tools:
- "My screen keeps locking or sleeping" is a power-state problem, and a jiggler is a clumsy way to solve it.
- "Something specifically watches for input" — a presence indicator, a session that disconnects on inactivity, an internal application with its own timeout — is an input problem, and a jiggler is genuinely the right shape.
Hardware vs software
Hardware jigglers
A USB dongle that presents itself as a mouse and nudges the pointer on its own schedule. Sometimes a small motorised pad that physically moves a real mouse.
In their favour: nothing to install, so they work on a machine where you cannot install software.
Against: they cost money, they occupy a port, most have a fixed interval you cannot change, and they move the cursor even when you are using it. They also appear as a connected input device — they do not hide, whatever the listing implies.
Mouse jiggler software
A program that produces the same movement. Free, adjustable, and it can do things a dongle cannot — including not moving your cursor at all, which is the next section.
Against: it needs installing, which is the reason hardware still sells.
The better default: block sleep without moving anything
Most people asking for a mouse jiggler want the screen to stay on. You do not need synthetic input for that.
Windows has a proper mechanism for it — an application can ask that the machine be treated as in use, which is what a media player does while a film is playing. It touches no input at all, so it cannot interfere with what you are typing and cannot move your pointer.

Work down that list rather than up it. Each step touches more of your machine than the last, and most problems are solved at step one.
What a mouse jiggler cannot do
- Override an administrator's lock policy. A managed machine locks on schedule. Nothing changes that.
- Hide. A dongle is a connected device; software is a running program. Neither conceals itself, and any product claiming it does is not being straight with you.
- Represent that you are working. It resets a timer. That is all it has ever done.

Which one you should use
If the screen is the problem, use a power-state block and skip jiggling entirely. If something specifically watches for input, use a keep-alive keystroke — it is less intrusive than cursor movement and it works on the same detectors. Use actual cursor movement only when you have found a detector that watches the pointer specifically, which is rarer than the product category suggests.
And if you cannot install anything at all, a hardware dongle is a reasonable purchase. It is just not the first thing to try.
